Taiwan to Build “T-Dome” Air Defense System
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has announced plans to establish a new multi-layered air defence network called “T-Dome.” The project is aimed at enhancing the country’s interception and detection capabilities in response to growing military pressure from China.
Features and Purpose
The T-Dome system will integrate multiple layers of defence, combining high-altitude detection with interception systems. Lai urged for the project’s swift implementation and called on Beijing to end coercive actions across the Taiwan Strait.
Context Under Rising Tensions
The move comes as Chinese military patrols and exercises around Taiwan have increased in recent months. Lai also confirmed that Taiwan will raise its defence budget to over 3% of GDP, with the long-term goal of reaching 5% to strengthen security.
Challenges and Outlook
Experts note that constructing T-Dome will demand advanced technology, significant funding, and close coordination among Taiwan’s defence agencies. The system’s effectiveness will depend on its integration with existing capabilities and its ability to deter escalating threats. The initiative reflects Taipei’s strategy of reinforcing sovereignty through “peace via strength.”
