Taiwan President Urges Trade With Democracies

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Tuesday that the island should expand trade and economic cooperation with other democracies rather than deepen ties with China, amid concerns about economic dependence on the mainland.

Focus on Democratic Partners

Speaking at a government forum, Tsai said diversifying Taiwan’s trade links is important for national security and economic resilience. She highlighted partnerships with countries in Europe, North America and the Indo-Pacific as key to reducing reliance on China’s market.

China Trade, Security Concerns

Taiwan’s trade with China has long been a major economic factor, but officials in Taipei have recently stressed the need to balance commercial interests with strategic autonomy. Tsai said that enhancing cooperation with democratic nations would help Taiwan build stronger economic and technological networks.

Economic Strategy Ahead

Taiwan’s government has been promoting initiatives to attract investment from democratic partners and expand exports in sectors like semiconductors, green technology and services. Officials said these efforts aim to reinforce Taiwan’s role in global supply chains while protecting its political and economic freedoms.
