Taiwan Flags Provocative Chinese Drone Flight
Taiwan said a Chinese military drone carried out what it described as a provocative flight over a Taiwan-controlled island in the South China Sea, raising concerns over regional security and stability.
Incident Over Pratas Islands
According to Taiwan’s defence authorities, the unmanned aerial vehicle flew over the Pratas Islands, also known as Dongsha, which are administered by Taiwan. The drone entered the area briefly before leaving after Taiwanese forces issued radio warnings. Officials said the aircraft did not engage in combat activity but called the move irresponsible and unnecessary.
Taiwan’s Military Response
The defence ministry said Taiwan’s armed forces monitored the situation closely and responded in accordance with standard operating procedures. It added that such actions increase the risk of miscalculation in a sensitive region and undermine efforts to maintain peace.
Wider Regional Context
China has intensified military activity around Taiwan and in the South China Sea in recent years, describing these operations as routine. Taiwan rejects Beijing’s claims over its territory and regularly reports Chinese aircraft and naval movements near its airspace and waters.
The Pratas Islands are strategically located in the South China Sea, an area marked by overlapping claims and growing military presence.
