Taiwan Faces Devastation as Super Typhoon Kong-rey Hits with Deadly Force

Super Typhoon Kong-rey, one of the most powerful storms to hit Taiwan in recent decades, made landfall on Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction.

The storm claimed at least one life and injured 73 people, according to the National Fire Agency. A fatality was reported in Nantou County when a tree, uprooted by the fierce winds, crushed a vehicle.

Intense Winds, Heavy Rains Lead to Widespread Disruptions

The typhoon brought maximum wind speeds of 184 km/h (114 mph) as it struck eastern Taiwan, causing widespread disruptions across the island. Streets in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, were largely empty as residents stayed indoors to avoid the intense winds and heavy rains. Over 35,000 soldiers were on standby to assist with relief operations.

Island-wide, businesses and schools were closed as residents braced for the storm. Disaster officials reported nearly 100,000 homes without power and confirmed that more than 400 domestic and international flights were canceled. All ferry services were suspended as well.

“Very Serious” Flooding in Hualien as Rescue Efforts Continue

Following the typhoon’s landfall, the eye of the storm moved past, intensifying the wind and rain. In Hualien County, the fire department reported “very serious” flooding, with rescue and evacuation operations still underway.

Disaster relief teams remain vigilant as the full impact of Typhoon Kong-rey unfolds.
