UEFA and its 55 member associations have unanimously agreed to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, unless FIFA abandons its proposal to sell minority interests in its tournaments to private investors. UEFA Announces Conditional FIFA Boycott European national teams will remain outside FIFA competitions while the private-investment proposal remains under consideration. UEFA has demanded that the plan be withdrawn entirely and that FIFA provide binding assurances against opening competitions or governance structures to private ownership. The decision followed an emergency meeting in which UEFA members voted unanimously against the proposal. The boycott could affect upcoming men’s, women’s and youth competitions if the dispute is not resolved. FIFA Private-Equity Plan Faces Opposition FIFA’s proposal would establish FIFA Forward Enterprise, a commercial subsidiary valued at about $20 billion. Private investors could acquire a minority, non-controlling stake, while FIFA says it would retain authority over competitions, governance and sporting decisions. The subsidiary would manage commercial operations connected to the World Cup and other FIFA tournaments. FIFA has promoted the plan as a way to increase development funding for its 211 member associations. UEFA argued that private ownership would create permanent pressure to deliver financial returns, potentially placing investor interests ahead of sporting priorities. Global Football Bodies Reject FIFA Proposal Opposition has extended beyond Europe. Concacaf rejected the proposal after raising concerns about transparency, the short consultation period and the absence of approval from FIFA’s main governance bodies. The Asian Football Confederation also criticised the lack of consultation and warned that the initiative could affect continental tournaments and domestic competitions. Players’ representatives have raised similar concerns about its long-term consequences. FIFA said it would continue consultations but acknowledged that the new subsidiary would not be established without sufficient support from member associations. It also rejected claims that the proposal amounted to selling football.
