It wants a clear assurance that States which successfully controlled population growth will not be politically disadvantaged. The party maintains that delimitation based solely on population could reduce the relative influence of southern States while increasing representation for more populous northern States. DMK leaders have said negotiations are possible only after the government provides concrete figures and protects Tamil Nadu’s political interests. Government Seeks Delimitation Bill Support The Union government has intensified discussions with political parties as it attempts to secure the two-thirds majority required for a constitutional amendment. The proposed legislation is expected to facilitate an increase in the strength of the Lok Sabha and create the framework needed to implement women’s reservation in Parliament and State Assemblies. The government’s earlier attempt to pass related constitutional changes failed to secure the required majority, making support from regional parties increasingly important. Tamil Nadu Representation Remains Key Concern The DMK has 22 members in the Lok Sabha, making its support potentially significant for the government’s parliamentary calculations. The party has consistently argued that Tamil Nadu should not be penalised for successfully implementing family planning and population-control policies. It wants any expansion of the Lok Sabha to preserve the proportional representation currently enjoyed by southern States. Further negotiations are expected before the government formally advances the proposed legislation in Parliament.
