India now ranks third globally in installed renewable energy capacity, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The development comes as non-fossil fuel sources have crossed half of India’s total installed power capacity. India Renewable Energy Capacity Reaches New High India’s non-fossil fuel power capacity has reached 262.7 gigawatts, crossing 50 per cent of the country’s total installed power capacity. Solar and wind energy continue to account for a major share of recent clean energy additions. The achievement strengthens India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets, supported by large-scale solar parks, wind projects, rooftop solar expansion and policy support for green energy. Solar And Wind Power Drive Growth Solar power remains the main driver of India’s renewable energy expansion, while wind energy continues to play an important role in states with strong wind corridors. The growth is also linked to India’s long-term target of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing clean electricity generation. The rise in renewable energy capacity can help India reduce emissions, lower fuel import pressure and improve energy security over time. Import Dependence Remains A Challenge Despite the strong growth, India still depends heavily on imported solar components. In FY25, India imported around 35 million solar modules worth about 1.6 billion US dollars, with a large share sourced from China. This dependence shows the need to localise key parts of the renewable energy supply chain, including solar cells, wafers, polysilicon and advanced battery storage. Clean Energy Transition Needs Local Manufacturing India’s renewable energy progress is significant, but future success will depend on domestic manufacturing, grid modernisation, storage capacity and faster project execution. Building a stronger clean energy supply chain will be crucial for reducing external dependence while sustaining India’s green power growth.
