A public interest litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking urgent medical intervention for climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, whose indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar entered its 18th day on Wednesday. Delhi High Court Issues Notice on Wangchuk Plea The petition, filed by activist-lawyer Rakesh Kumar Saini, asks the court to direct the Centre and the Delhi government to move Wangchuk to a hospital, provide immediate treatment and end his fast through force-feeding if necessary. The Delhi High Court issued notices to both governments and sought their responses by Thursday, when the matter is expected to be heard. The petition claims Wangchuk’s condition has deteriorated to a life-threatening level and warns that he could die within two days if the fast continues. The assertion forms part of the petition and has not been presented as a formal medical prognosis. Sonam Wangchuk Loses 8.5 Kilograms Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28. A recent health update said he had lost approximately 8.5 kilograms, while his blood pressure had fallen to 109/70. Supporters said he was experiencing dizziness, weakness and difficulty walking. Academics, political leaders and members of the film industry have appealed to him to end the protest because of concerns over his health. Hunger Strike Linked to Education Protest Wangchuk joined a youth-led protest over alleged examination irregularities and concerns surrounding the education system. The protesters are demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, compensation for affected families and broader education reforms. The group has also announced a march towards Parliament on July 20, the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
