Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has triggered a fresh political row over delimitation after modifying the emphasis of his government’s position during the Southern Zonal Council meeting. While the Tamil Nadu Assembly had earlier demanded a permanent freeze on the Lok Sabha’s strength at 543 seats, Vijay’s latest remarks focused on protecting the state’s existing proportion of parliamentary representation. Vijay’s Delimitation Message Sparks Political Row At the Southern Zonal Council meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Vijay urged the Centre to ensure that Tamil Nadu does not lose its existing share of representation in Parliament during any future delimitation exercise. However, he did not reiterate the Assembly resolution’s specific demand that the total number of Lok Sabha seats be permanently frozen at 543. The difference in wording prompted opposition parties to accuse the TVK government of softening or changing its earlier position. Tamil Nadu Assembly Sought Permanent 543-Seat Freeze On August 12, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution moved by Vijay calling on the Union government to permanently retain the Lok Sabha’s existing strength of 543 seats. The resolution also sought protection of the current distribution of seats among states and implementation of 33% women’s reservation without expanding the Lok Sabha. Vijay subsequently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking constitutional measures to protect the existing representation of southern states. Delimitation Remains Major Tamil Nadu Issue Tamil Nadu has argued that population-based delimitation could penalise southern states that successfully controlled population growth while improving economic and social indicators. The state currently has 39 Lok Sabha seats and is seeking guarantees that its relative political representation will not decline. The latest controversy is therefore focused primarily on whether Vijay has altered the method he favours for protecting Tamil Nadu’s representation, rather than abandoning opposition to any reduction in the state’s parliamentary influence.
