The US Senate has passed a short-term spending bill aimed at preventing a federal government shutdown, while leaving out President Donald Trump’s request for around $70 billion in emergency funding connected to the war with Iran. US Senate Passes Stopgap Spending Bill Senators voted 90-6 to approve the legislation, which would keep the federal government funded from the start of the new fiscal year on October 1 through December 11. The measure was advanced ahead of the Senate’s summer recess and weeks before the November midterm elections, reducing the immediate risk of another federal shutdown. The bill also allows several government projects, including certain military hardware programmes, to continue during the temporary funding period. Trump Iran War Funding Left Out The legislation does not include approximately $70 billion in additional Iran war funding requested by the Trump administration. The White House had urged the Senate to approve the emergency military funding separately, but lawmakers are preparing to leave Washington for their summer recess without acting on the request. The decision does not permanently block additional funding for military operations involving Iran. Congress could still consider the administration’s request separately when lawmakers return. Trump Voting Restrictions Also Excluded Trump’s push to include new voting restrictions was also left out after Republican leaders indicated they lacked sufficient support to pass the proposals. The spending bill additionally contains provisions preventing a White House grant rule that critics argued could favour Republican-controlled states. The measure now heads to the House of Representatives, which is expected to consider it after lawmakers return on August 31. House approval will be required before the legislation can reach Trump for his signature.
