Iran has threatened to halt oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf if the United States continues what Tehran describes as an “economic war”. The warning was issued by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei amid plans by Washington for tougher sanctions. Iranian officials have dismissed the latest pressure as a continuation of sanctions the country has faced for years. Tehran Escalates Rhetoric Against US Sanctions Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also criticised Washington’s economic strategy, arguing that aggressive sanctions could ultimately damage the countries imposing them. Iranian military officials have similarly portrayed Washington’s increasing reliance on economic measures as evidence that military pressure has failed to achieve US objectives. The escalating rhetoric has renewed concerns about energy security in the Persian Gulf, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz remains central to both Iran’s strategic leverage and global oil trade.
