US Canada trade relations – Bharat Pulse News

Canada is preparing retaliatory tariffs against the United States after relations deteriorated sharply over President Donald Trump’s latest trade measures. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would not accept any negotiating approach that treats Canada as a “subsidiary” of the US. Mark Carney Rejects US Trade Demands Carney said Canada walked away from recent negotiations because Washington’s demands would have weakened major Canadian industries, particularly automobiles, steel and aluminium. He argued that the proposed arrangement went beyond normal tariff negotiations and raised broader concerns over Canadian sovereignty and economic independence. Carney said Canada remains open to trade discussions but would not accept terms that could gradually shift industrial production and investment south of the border. Canada Plans Retaliatory Tariffs Against US Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and other Cabinet ministers are expected to announce Ottawa’s response after the US imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Carney indicated that Canada may move away from matching every US tariff dollar for dollar and instead introduce more targeted measures designed to protect workers and strategically important industries. The dispute has already affected some of North America’s most deeply integrated supply chains. Trump Threatens 50% Auto Tariffs on Canada Trump has also threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel beginning next year, accusing Canada of unfair trade practices. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has backed a strong Canadian response and said options could include measures involving electricity and critical mineral exports if the dispute escalates further. The growing confrontation represents one of the sharpest deteriorations in US-Canada trade relations in decades, with autos, manufacturing, energy and agriculture increasingly exposed to retaliatory action.
