The United States will ban imports of certain Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motor vehicles from September 29, sharply escalating the trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa after negotiations between the neighbouring countries broke down. Trump Expands Canada Trade Measures President Donald Trump signed separate proclamations targeting Canadian products after accusing Canada of maintaining discriminatory trade restrictions against American alcohol, dairy and vehicle exports. The affected goods had already faced additional US duties following the collapse of negotiations in August. The new measures move beyond tariffs by excluding specified Canadian products from the American market altogether. Trump has also directed US federal agencies to begin removing Canadian-origin goods from major government procurement programmes until what his administration calls “full and fair reciprocity” is restored. Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods The US action came as Canadian retaliatory tariffs on around $20 billion worth of American imports took effect. Ottawa introduced the measures after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods following unsuccessful trade negotiations. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended the retaliation while seeking to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States. US-Canada Trade Relations Face Growing Strain The escalating dispute has raised fresh concerns about the future of economic integration between the two countries and the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The United States remains Canada’s largest export market, making prolonged trade restrictions particularly significant for Canadian businesses. Washington and Ottawa remain in contact, but no agreement has yet emerged to halt the widening trade confrontation.
