The United Nations cultural agency has urged Pakistan to address conservation concerns at Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage site, after recent works at two historic locations raised questions over the site’s authenticity and integrity. The site includes ancient settlements, Buddhist monasteries, a Mesolithic cave, a mosque and a madrassa. The ruins show the evolution of urban life in the Indian subcontinent over several centuries. Because of its historical and cultural importance, Taxila is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is expected to follow strict conservation standards. Pakistan Archaeology Department Response Pakistan’s archaeology officials have rejected the claim that the work amounts to reconstruction. They said the interventions are conservation measures aimed at stabilising fragile remains and preventing further deterioration. UNESCO has sought documentation on the work carried out at Mohra Moradu and Sirkap. The issue could lead to closer international scrutiny, and if concerns remain unresolved, Taxila may face the risk of being placed on the World Heritage danger list.
