Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected calls for elections while the war with Russia continues, warning that holding a national vote during active hostilities could deepen political divisions and weaken the country at a critical moment. Zelenskyy Rejects Wartime Ukraine Election Zelenskyy said Ukraine should not conduct elections while the country remains under martial law and continues fighting Russia’s invasion. He argued that campaigning and political competition during wartime could undermine national unity, particularly when large numbers of Ukrainians are serving in the armed forces, displaced abroad or living in Russian-occupied territories. Ukrainian law currently prevents national elections from being held while martial law remains in force. Ukraine Election Debate Grows During War The issue has become increasingly sensitive as political figures and some international voices raise questions about when Ukraine should return to the ballot box. Zelenskyy has maintained that elections can be held once the security situation allows for a credible and inclusive vote. Organising elections during wartime would involve major logistical challenges, including ensuring participation by soldiers, refugees and Ukrainians living in territories affected by fighting. Zelenskyy Prioritises War and National Unity Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s immediate priority remains defending the country, preserving sovereignty and securing an end to the war on acceptable terms. He warned that a premature election could trigger domestic political confrontation at a time when national institutions remain focused on the military effort. The debate over Ukraine’s electoral timetable is expected to continue as the war drags on, but no national election has been formally scheduled while martial law remains in place.
