Turkey seismic activity – Bharat Pulse News

A series of earthquakes rocked Istanbul on April 23, 2025, triggering widespread panic across the city and forcing evacuations in several districts. The most powerful tremor registered a magnitude of 6.2 with its epicenter located off the coast of Silivri in the Marmara Sea, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Istanbul. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and was felt strongly across the city, sending residents rushing out of buildings and into open spaces. Aftershocks Rattle Residents Within hours of the initial jolt, multiple aftershocks were reported, including a 5.3 magnitude tremor that intensified anxiety in the city. The Buyukcekmece district, situated in western Istanbul, recorded at least three separate earthquakes in quick succession. These aftershocks prompted emergency response teams to remain on high alert, and authorities advised people to avoid standing near old or vulnerable structures. The sudden spike in seismic activity caused gridlock in some neighborhoods as people attempted to evacuate congested areas. Emergency shelters were opened in several parks and municipal facilities as a precautionary measure. Government Response and Safety Measures Authorities have reassured the public that there have been no major casualties or structural collapses so far, although assessments are ongoing. The Turkish disaster management agency has deployed field teams to monitor damage, and officials have advised residents to prepare emergency kits and remain vigilant for potential further tremors. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that coordination centers have been activated and emergency hotlines are operational across the city. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has asked citizens to refrain from spreading unverified information and instead rely on official alerts and advisories. Seismic Vulnerability and Public Awareness Turkey’s location on the North Anatolian Fault makes it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. The country has invested significantly in urban renewal projects and seismic reinforcement following the catastrophic February 2023 quake, which claimed tens of thousands of lives. This latest series of tremors serves as a stark reminder of Istanbul’s ongoing vulnerability and the urgent need for disaster preparedness. Residents are urged to follow safety protocols, remain calm, and stay tuned to official updates as aftershocks continue to be recorded across the Marmara region.
