US President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on selected Canadian imports worth approximately $20 billion, escalating trade tensions between the neighbouring countries over automobiles, alcohol and agricultural products. Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian goods The new tariffs will take effect on August 19, following a 30-day implementation period. Products affected include Canadian wine, cement, hockey equipment, clothing, seeds and several manufactured goods. Contrary to some initial headlines, the measure does not cover most Canadian exports to the United States. Energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals are among the exemptions, while goods already covered by separate national-security tariffs are treated differently. The duties will apply even to targeted products that would otherwise qualify for preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. US cites discriminatory Canadian trade rules The Trump administration accused Canada of discriminating against American automobiles, alcoholic beverages and dairy products through tariffs, quotas and provincial distribution restrictions. Washington invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a rarely used provision allowing the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% on countries found to discriminate against US commerce. Its use marks a significant change in tariff strategy after earlier trade measures imposed under emergency-powers legislation faced legal challenges. Canada criticises new US tariffs Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa remained prepared to negotiate but argued that the tariffs violated North American trade commitments and would raise costs for American families. Canadian officials are considering retaliatory measures, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford has called for a strong response if negotiations fail. The tariffs could affect integrated supply chains and increase prices for importers and consumers in both countries. Businesses now have until August 19 to adjust shipments or seek alternative suppliers while Washington and Ottawa continue discussions aimed at preventing a broader trade confrontation.
