Global oil prices fell by more than $4 a barrel after US President Donald Trump suspended planned attacks on Iranian infrastructure and shifted towards negotiations with Tehran. Brent and WTI Crude Prices Slide Brent crude futures fell $4.08, or 4.64%, to $83.85 a barrel in early trading. US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped $4.01, or 4.74%, to $80.66 a barrel. Prices extended their decline as trading progressed, with Brent falling below $84 and WTI briefly dropping below $80. The market movement reflected reduced expectations of an immediate escalation that could further disrupt energy infrastructure and shipping across the Gulf. Both crude benchmarks had risen by more than 20% during July as renewed US strikes on Iran and attacks on tankers near Oman heightened concerns about global oil supplies. Trump Suspends Planned Iran Attacks Trump said he had called off a planned military operation against Iran after appeals from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. He said negotiations with Tehran would focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resolving the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme. The president provided no independent details about the proposed targets or scale of the suspended operation. Uncertainty remains over whether the renewed diplomatic process will produce an agreement. Hormuz Negotiations Ease Supply Concerns The Strait of Hormuz remains critical to the oil market because around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments normally pass through the waterway. Traffic through the strait has remained restricted following attacks on commercial vessels and continuing military tensions. Any agreement that restores normal shipping could reduce the geopolitical premium built into crude prices. Oil markets remain vulnerable to renewed volatility if negotiations fail or military operations resume. OPEC+ has also approved a production increase of 188,000 barrels per day for September, adding further downward pressure on prices.
