US President Donald Trump has announced a new agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give Washington an expanded and permanent security role in Greenland, while leaving sovereignty over the Arctic territory unchanged. Denmark and Greenland said the agreement is expected to be signed next week and will require parliamentary procedures before entering into force. US Expands Greenland Military Access Trump said the United States would have the long-term ability to take measures necessary to defend Greenland and North America. US officials said the arrangement includes permanent military access, basing and overflight rights, potentially allowing Washington to substantially expand its existing presence on the strategically located island. The agreement would also prevent countries regarded by Washington as adversaries, particularly Russia and China, from establishing military bases in Greenland. Mechanisms are also expected to restrict sensitive investments considered potential security risks. Greenland Sovereignty Remains Unchanged Despite Trump describing the agreement as giving the United States “permanent control” over Greenland’s security, Denmark has stressed that the arrangement does not transfer sovereignty or ownership of the territory to Washington. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination. Greenlandic leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the arrangement would strengthen security for Greenland and the wider Western alliance. Greenland Deal Strengthens Arctic Security Greenland occupies a strategically important position between North America and Europe and already hosts the US-operated Pituffik Space Base. The latest agreement significantly expands Washington’s security role while avoiding the transfer of Greenland that Trump had previously advocated.
