Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has announced that he will not seek reappointment after his current term ends on February 20, 2027, setting the stage for a major leadership transition at India’s largest business conglomerate. He will continue serving as chairman until the completion of his present tenure. N Chandrasekaran to Leave Tata Sons Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons board that he had decided against seeking another term after nearly a decade at the helm. He said clarity over future leadership was necessary for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders, particularly as several major Tata Group projects remain at critical stages of execution. Chandrasekaran has asked the board to decide on his successor soon to ensure an orderly transition. Tata Sons Reappointment Plan Hit Deadlock His decision follows months of uncertainty over a proposed five-year extension beyond February 2027. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had recommended extending Chandrasekaran’s tenure. The proposal also received backing through Tata Sons’ nomination process. However, when the proposal reached the Tata Sons board in February 2026, it failed to progress because one board member did not support it. With no resolution reached after several months, Chandrasekaran decided not to offer himself for reappointment. Tata Group Begins Succession Transition Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and later became CEO of Tata Consultancy Services in 2009. He took over as Tata Sons chairman in 2017. His tenure has covered major expansions across aviation, electronics, semiconductors, automobiles and digital businesses, alongside the acquisition and restructuring of Air India. No successor has yet been announced, placing Tata Sons’ leadership succession among the group’s most closely watched developments ahead of Chandrasekaran’s departure in 2027.
