Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend greater support to the state, arguing that Karnataka’s development is closely connected to India’s wider economic progress. Karnataka Seeks Greater Central Support Shivakumar made the appeal during the Prime Minister’s visit to Mysuru on Saturday. He asked the Centre to adopt a generous approach towards Karnataka and support the state’s development requirements through stronger cooperation and financial assistance. The Chief Minister said Karnataka had made substantial contributions to the country through taxation, technology, innovation, employment and service exports. He maintained that investing in the state would also strengthen India’s growth prospects. Shivakumar called for the Union and state governments to work together despite their political differences, stressing that development should remain the principal consideration in Centre-state relations. Karnataka Infrastructure Projects Need Assistance The Karnataka government has been seeking central funding and regulatory clearances for several major infrastructure and irrigation projects. Its priorities include the expansion of Bengaluru Metro, suburban rail connectivity, highway development and the proposed Mekedatu reservoir. The state has also requested support for the Upper Bhadra and Kalasa-Banduri water projects, along with additional investment in Bengaluru’s transport, water supply, drainage and waste-management systems. Karnataka has argued that Bengaluru’s position as a major technology and services hub makes its infrastructure requirements nationally significant. Drought Concerns Add Financial Pressure Shivakumar’s appeal comes as Karnataka faces deficient monsoon rainfall, reduced reservoir storage and concerns over agricultural production and drinking water availability. The state has requested that the Centre send a team to assess the emerging drought conditions and provide timely assistance. Karnataka is simultaneously dealing with the Cauvery water-sharing dispute after authorities directed it to release 3,500 cusecs daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
