The issue before the country is no longer merely about a student agitation or another political protest. It has evolved into something much larger—a defining test of governance. A government that came to power promising decisive leadership now finds itself confronting a familiar spectacle: television screens dominated by protests, repeated clashes with police, relentless political mobilisation and a rapidly expanding social media campaign. Peaceful protest is unquestionably a constitutional right and remains an essential pillar of any democracy. Equally, however, no democracy can function if prolonged disruption, recurring law-and-order challenges and political brinkmanship become accepted methods of public negotiation. Every elected government has not only a duty to safeguard the right to dissent but also an equally important responsibility to ensure that public order, normal civic life and the rule of law are not indefinitely compromised. That is why the CJP agitation is no longer simply a story about those protesting. It has become a test of whether Narendra Modi and Amit Shah still represent the decisive model of governance that millions of Indians believed they were voting for. The BJP Was Elected So India Would Never See Another Shaheen Bagh One of the BJP's greatest electoral strengths was never limited to nationalism, economic development or welfare programmes. It was the promise of decisive governance. Millions of Indians believed that prolonged political paralysis would become a thing of the past under a government that projected confidence in taking difficult decisions. Whether one supported or opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act eventually became secondary in public memory. What remained was the image of the national capital enduring months of disruption while governments struggled to restore normalcy. For many voters, Shaheen Bagh came to symbolise administrative hesitation as much as political disagreement. They expected that experience to become a lesson—not a precedent. This Is No Longer a Protest. It Is a Test of State Authority Every democracy must distinguish between peaceful protest and sustained disruption. Governments have a constitutional obligation to protect lawful dissent, but they also carry an equally important responsibility to preserve public order. Once demonstrations begin resulting in repeated confrontations, extensive deployment of security forces, prolonged disruption to public life or continuing instability, the challenge ceases to be purely political. It becomes an administrative test. Citizens rarely judge governments by the slogans shouted on either side. They judge them by whether institutions remain functional, the law is applied consistently and normal life is restored without unnecessary delay. The Toolkit Returns: The Battle Moves from the Streets to Social Media Modern political movements are no longer confined to streets and public squares. Every major agitation today has two fronts—the physical protest and the digital campaign that shapes public perception. Within hours of the march, social media witnessed a surge of commentary from actors, filmmakers and public personalities, many framing the issue through similar themes surrounding democracy, student rights and the state's response. Whether this reflects genuinely shared convictions or a broader ecosystem of narrative amplification is open to debate. What is beyond dispute, however, is the effect. A protest that may be geographically limited rapidly becomes a national conversation dominating television studios, news portals and social media timelines. The Same Voices Appear Every Time Several public figures—including Sonu Sood, Vir Das, Dia Mirza, Soha Ali Khan, Aditi Rao Hydari, Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia Deshmukh, Prakash Raj, Shabana Azmi and Diljit Dosanjh—publicly commented after the march. The point is not to suggest, without evidence, that these individuals are participants in a centrally coordinated campaign. Rather, the observation is that many of the same personalities consistently emerge during high-profile political controversies. Whether this reflects shared ideological convictions, similar social networks or simply common political preferences, the pattern is sufficiently consistent that critics often describe it as a recurring activist ecosystem capable of rapidly amplifying selected causes. How Did Modi and Shah Fail to Anticipate This? If the sequence feels familiar, it is because India has witnessed versions of it before. Shaheen Bagh, the farmers' protest and several subsequent political movements demonstrated how quickly street mobilisation can evolve into a much larger media and social media campaign. That is precisely why the sharper criticism should be directed not at actors or activists, who are exercising their own choices, but at a government that should have anticipated this trajectory. A political pattern repeated several times ceases to be a surprise. It becomes something competent governance should expect and prepare for. Every Additional Day Makes the Government Look Smaller Time rarely weakens a high-profile agitation. More often, it strengthens it. Each additional day produces fresh headlines, attracts new supporters, encourages celebrity endorsements, fuels political commentary and offers opposition parties fresh opportunities to shape public perception. Gradually, the focus shifts away from the original issue itself. The larger question becomes whether the government remains in control of events or is merely reacting to them. Perception may not always reflect reality, but in politics it often becomes reality. The Silent Majority Wants Governance, Not Endless Political Theatre The loudest voices on television debates and social media seldom represent the average citizen. Most Indians are neither political activists nor professional commentators. They simply expect governments to govern. Their expectations are straightforward. They want public institutions to function, essential services to continue uninterrupted and disputes to be resolved within the framework of the law. Ultimately, this silent majority judges governments less by political rhetoric than by administrative outcomes. My Vote Was Never Permanent My support for the BJP was never unconditional, nor was it rooted in blind political loyalty. Like many voters, I supported the party because it projected administrative competence, decisive leadership and the belief that prolonged political paralysis would no longer become India's default response to every major controversy. If those expectations are no longer met, then political support naturally becomes conditional once again. Democracy does not demand permanent loyalty from voters. It demands accountability from governments. Dear Modi and Shah: If You Can't End the CJP Siege, Don't Ask for My Vote in 2029 This is not a plea for authoritarianism, nor is it an argument against peaceful democratic protest. It is a reminder of the promise on which the BJP sought and received public support: decisive, lawful and confident governance. Many ordinary voters will not judge this government by speeches, election slogans or campaign advertisements. They will judge it by whether it demonstrated the resolve to maintain public order while respecting constitutional freedoms. If prolonged national spectacles become commonplace under a government elected to prevent precisely such situations, then voters are entitled to ask a difficult question. What exactly has changed?
