The images emerging from Tripura are an absolute disgrace. Not because India's Border Security Force lacks courage or capability, but because armed personnel entrusted with guarding an international border were beaten, surrounded and humiliated by a violent mob carrying bamboo sticks. The attackers vandalised a BSF vehicle, assaulted personnel including an officer, and even snatched a service weapon that was subsequently recovered. Three personnel were injured. The entire incident was captured on video, and the footage has circulated extensively across social media. This happened on November 2 near the Ashabari Border Outpost in Tripura's Sepahijala district, during a confrontation arising from an anti-smuggling operation. Nine people have since been arrested. Chief Minister Manik Saha has condemned the attack and promised action against those responsible. But the arrests and condemnations do not erase the disturbing reality of what happened. India's armed border guards were physically overpowered by a mob, and their weapons became targets of the attackers themselves. Mr Amit Shah, as India's Union Home Minister, you oversee the ministry responsible for the BSF. You are also one of the most prominent political faces of a government that has repeatedly projected national security, strong borders and muscular nationalism as defining features of its administration. So here is a question that deserves a direct answer. What is the point of arming our border guards if they cannot effectively defend themselves when violent mobs beat them, threaten their lives and attempt to seize their weapons? Mr Home Minister, What Exactly Are These Weapons For? A BSF jawan does not carry a rifle as a ceremonial accessory. He carries it because his duties involve confronting threats to India's borders, including smugglers, infiltrators, organised criminal networks and potentially armed adversaries. His weapon is part of the authority and responsibility vested in him by the Indian state. When that jawan is surrounded by a violent mob attempting to beat him into submission and take away his firearm, the situation is no longer an ordinary protest or a disagreement with law enforcement. A bamboo stick can kill. A coordinated mob assault can kill. A service rifle wrested from a security officer can kill. The danger does not become less serious merely because the attackers arrived without firearms of their own. The moment attackers try to seize a loaded weapon from a uniformed officer, they create a potentially deadly confrontation in which the lives of the personnel and others nearby may be at immediate risk. Indian law recognises the right to defend oneself against attacks that create a reasonable apprehension of death or grievous injury. That protection does not disappear because the person under attack is wearing a BSF uniform. Yet the Tripura footage raises a question that cannot be brushed aside: why did the confrontation reach a stage where personnel were being beaten and disarmed? Was there hesitation? Were there operational restrictions? Did the team lack adequate reinforcement? The Home Ministry must establish the answers. Remove the Political Shackles, If They Are Holding the Forces Back Mr Shah, national security requires more than weapons, uniforms and speeches. It requires political leadership that will stand firmly behind personnel who exercise their lawful authority when their lives are threatened. If BSF personnel reasonably believe that they face death or grievous injury, including because attackers are attempting to seize their firearms, they must know that necessary defensive force, including gunfire where legally justified, will have the support of their government. There should be no uncertainty about that commitment. No jawan should have to wonder whether an act of lawful self-defence will turn him into a political liability. No commanding officer should feel pressured to place public relations above the immediate safety of personnel under attack. And no government should allow its security forces to develop the impression that being beaten on camera is politically easier to manage than defending themselves decisively. We do not yet know whether any such political or operational hesitation contributed to the Ashabari incident. But that uncertainty is itself a reason for the Home Minister to speak clearly. The message must be that personnel acting lawfully to stop a life-threatening assault will not be abandoned merely because their actions provoke controversy. If defensive gunfire is necessary to save lives, the political establishment must have the resolve to support it. A Violent Mob Cannot Be Allowed to Dictate the Terms The attackers at Ashabari did not merely assemble to register a grievance. They blocked a road, attacked BSF personnel with sticks, vandalised their vehicle and targeted their weapons. That is violent criminal conduct, whatever grievances may have preceded it. Disputes over the detention or treatment of a local resident can be investigated through the appropriate legal channels. They cannot justify physically assaulting the men guarding India's border. There is a fundamental difference between an individual raising a complaint against a security officer and a mob attempting to overpower armed personnel. The former is entitled to due process. The latter creates an immediate threat that must be contained. When personnel face violence capable of causing death or serious injury, the law permits necessary defensive action. It does not require them to become helpless targets simply because their attackers have gathered in large numbers. The example that needs to be set is unmistakable. Organised violence against border guards cannot become a successful method of intimidating law enforcement. Smuggling networks must never come to believe that mobilising a crowd is enough to obstruct an operation, injure personnel and force the state to retreat. Every attacker must face the legal consequences of his or her actions, and every BSF jawan must know that the government will back the lawful exercise of force necessary to stop a grave assault. Nationalism Cannot Be Reduced to Political Publicity For years, the government has spoken extensively about national security, stronger borders and respect for those serving in uniform. Such declarations carry real responsibilities. The public has every right to ask whether the government's performance matches the strength of its rhetoric, particularly when footage emerges of border personnel being assaulted and disarmed. A government cannot claim political credit for every successful security operation while treating operational failures as matters to be handled solely by the officers on the ground. Leadership means taking responsibility when the system does not work as intended. It means examining whether personnel have the authority, training, equipment and confidence needed to confront dangerous situations. Most importantly, it means making difficult decisions even when those decisions carry political consequences. The BSF is not a political toy. Its personnel are not campaign props, their injuries are not publicity material, and their humiliation should never become another spectacle around which political parties manufacture nationalist sentiment. If the government wants to be recognised for its commitment to national security, let that commitment be visible in the treatment of the men who actually enforce it. They deserve something more substantial than applause, patriotic slogans and statements issued after they have already been assaulted. Nine Arrests Do Not Answer the Bigger Question The arrest of nine people in connection with the Tripura attack is an important development. The police investigation must identify everyone who participated, establish individual responsibility and examine whether organised smuggling networks played a role in mobilising the violence. Reports about possible cross-border involvement also warrant investigation, with responsibility established through evidence rather than assumption. But the criminal investigation addresses only one part of the problem. The other concerns the conduct and readiness of the security apparatus itself. Why were BSF personnel overwhelmed? How was their service weapon snatched? What defensive options were available to them? Were there failures in planning or command? And what message will the ministry send to personnel confronting another violent mob tomorrow? These are questions for the Union Home Minister, not merely for a local police station. The protection of India's international borders is a national responsibility. So is ensuring that the personnel entrusted with that responsibility can defend themselves against dangerous attacks without fearing abandonment by their political leadership. Amit Shah, Stand Behind Your Forces and Set an Example Mr Home Minister, India does not need another speech explaining how much the government respects its security forces. It needs clarity about what happens when those forces face a violent mob intent on beating them and seizing their weapons. It needs to know that lawful self-defence will be supported by the highest levels of government, including when a necessary defensive response results in the death of an attacker. If political hesitation is preventing BSF personnel from exercising their lawful authority, remove it. If operational procedures are unclear, clarify them. If commanders fear political repercussions for necessary defensive action, address that fear directly. But do not allow India's border guards to be left in a position where they must endure a potentially fatal assault while the political establishment remains silent about the consequences of defending themselves. Let the BSF act decisively against violent mobs. Let personnel use their weapons when the law permits it and their lives are in danger. Let those who assault India's border guards understand that the state will not surrender its authority to mob violence. And let every jawan know that the Home Minister will stand firmly behind him when he acts within the law to defend himself and his colleagues. Amit Shah, the question is no longer whether your government can speak the language of strong national security. The question is whether it has the political will to stand behind the men who must enforce it when their lives are on the line.
