Governments do not lose the trust of their supporters overnight. They lose it one decision at a time. Elections are ultimately about faith. Every voter walks into a polling booth believing that the party they support represents a certain set of principles. Policies may change. Leaders may come and go. Mistakes may happen. But what keeps supporters loyal is the belief that the core philosophy of the party remains intact. For millions of Indians, that was precisely what the Bharatiya Janata Party represented. It was the party that promised strong governance over political convenience. It spoke of the rule of law rather than the rule of the street. It argued that governments must never allow pressure tactics, violent agitation or organised disruption to dictate public policy. Whether one agreed with every BJP decision or not, there was a reassuring consistency in that promise. That belief has now been shaken. Following the recent CJP protests, the governments of Bihar and Assam announced that they would withdraw cases against protesters. These announcements came after days of sustained agitation that saw clashes with security forces and widespread disruption. At the same time, Delhi Police informed Parliament that among those present during the Parliament march were hundreds of individuals with criminal antecedents, including many facing serious criminal charges. Those allegations remain subject to the legal process, but they have inevitably shaped the public debate surrounding the protests. For me, however, this is not about CJP. It is not about whether every protester was guilty or innocent. It is not about Left versus Right. It is about the BJP. It is about a government that sought one of the strongest mandates in independent India's history on the promise of decisive governance, only to send the message that enough pressure on the streets can force political retreat. That is the moment the BJP lost my vote. The BJP Was Elected to Stand Firm, Not Fold The BJP did not build its political identity merely by promising development or economic reforms. It built it by convincing ordinary Indians that it would govern differently from previous governments. For years, the party criticised what it described as appeasement politics and governments that routinely buckled under organised pressure. It argued that difficult decisions required political courage and that maintaining law and order could never become secondary to managing headlines. That image mattered. Many supporters accepted difficult reforms, unpopular policies and political controversies because they believed the government would never compromise on its commitment to the rule of law. A strong mandate, after all, is not simply permission to govern. It is a responsibility to govern with conviction. When governments elected on that promise begin retreating under street pressure, supporters naturally begin asking whether anything has really changed. The Withdrawal of Cases Changed Everything Every government decision carries two consequences. The first is legal. The second is political. The legal process surrounding the withdrawal of criminal cases will ultimately follow its own course through the courts. But politically, the message has already reached the public. The sequence is impossible to ignore. Protests intensify. Political pressure builds. Governments announce the withdrawal of cases. Whether intended or not, the perception that emerges is that sustained street mobilisation can force political concessions. That perception is damaging. Governments must always distinguish between peaceful dissent and unlawful conduct. Once that distinction begins to blur in public perception, confidence in equal enforcement of the law inevitably suffers. Supporters who voted for firmness begin wondering whether firmness was merely an election slogan. What Message Does This Send to Every Future Agitation? Governments create precedents far more often through their actions than through legislation. Every future protest movement will study what happened here. The issue itself almost becomes irrelevant. Whether tomorrow's agitation concerns education, reservations, language, agriculture, taxation or any other contentious subject, one lesson appears to stand out. Apply enough pressure. Sustain the agitation. Eventually the government may retreat. No democratic government should want that to become the prevailing political lesson. Street protests are an important part of democracy. Street pressure becoming an alternative route to political decision-making is something entirely different. The more governments appear to reward disruptive mobilisation, the greater the incentive for future groups to adopt the same methods. That is a dangerous precedent for any democracy. A Government That Fears the Mob Cannot Govern Confidently Governments are elected to make decisions that are sometimes difficult and sometimes unpopular. If every controversial policy ultimately becomes subject to the intensity of protests rather than the strength of the government's conviction, electoral mandates begin losing their meaning. A decisive mandate is valuable only if the government is willing to exercise it. Otherwise, elections risk becoming little more than temporary pauses between successive agitations. India deserves governments that listen to criticism without allowing intimidation to become a governing principle. Strength is demonstrated not by winning elections but by having the confidence to govern after winning them. Supporters Feel Betrayed Too Political parties rarely lose because their opponents suddenly become more convincing. More often, they lose because their own supporters stop recognising the party they once voted for. That is where I find myself today. I did not support the BJP because I expected perfection. No government is perfect. I supported it because I believed it would stand firm where others had compromised. I believed it would defend the rule of law regardless of political consequences. I believed it would never allow organised street pressure to dictate governance. That belief has now been deeply shaken. This Is Why the BJP Lost My Vote This article is not a defence of CJP. Nor is it an endorsement of every police action or every criminal case filed. It is about something much larger. It is about the relationship between citizens and the governments they elect. When people vote overwhelmingly for a government that promises decisive governance, they expect decisions to be guided by law, evidence and constitutional institutions—not by whichever group can generate the loudest political pressure. The withdrawal of cases against the protesters may prove to be a short-term political calculation. But for supporters like me, it carries a far greater cost. It signals that the government I voted for has abandoned one of the very principles that persuaded me to support it in the first place. That is why the BJP lost my vote. Not because the opposition became stronger. Not because another party inspired greater confidence. But because the BJP stopped being the party I believed I was voting for.
