Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has drawn attention after likening some unemployed youngsters to “cockroaches” while hearing a matter linked to senior advocate designation in the Supreme Court. CJI Surya Kant Remarks On Unemployed Youths The remarks were made by a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi while dealing with a plea connected to the senior advocate designation process. During the hearing, the CJI criticised what he described as people who attack the system after failing to find a professional place for themselves. He said some unemployed youngsters become media persons, social media users, RTI activists or other activists and begin attacking everyone. Supreme Court Hearing On Senior Advocate Designation The comments came while the bench was pulling up a lawyer over his pursuit of senior advocate designation. The court reportedly questioned the petitioner’s professional conduct and objected to the language allegedly used by him on social media. The bench said not everyone eligible in theory could be entitled to senior designation in practice, especially if their conduct did not meet professional standards expected from advocates. RTI Activists And Media Comment Draws Attention The court’s comments have triggered wider discussion because they referred to media persons, social media users and RTI activists in the context of people attacking the system. RTI activists and media workers often play a public accountability role, which is why the language used during the hearing is likely to remain under scrutiny. The matter has also renewed debate over how constitutional authorities describe citizens who use public platforms or transparency tools to question institutions.
