Reddit has filed a legal challenge in Australia against the country’s new law that restricts access to major social media platforms for users under the age of 16. The company has approached Australia’s High Court, arguing that the legislation unfairly applies to its platform and raises constitutional concerns. Reddit Questions Scope of the Law In its petition, Reddit said the law wrongly categorises the platform alongside traditional social networking sites. The company argued that Reddit functions primarily as a discussion and information-sharing forum, rather than a profile-driven social network. It also raised concerns that enforcing the ban would require intrusive age-verification measures, potentially affecting user privacy and access for adults. Background of Australia’s Social Media Ban The Australian law, which came into force this week, requires designated social media platforms to prevent users under 16 from holding accounts. Companies that fail to comply can face significant financial penalties. The government has said the measure is aimed at protecting young people from online harm and improving mental health outcomes. Government Defends Legislation Australian authorities have defended the law, stating that platforms must take responsibility for safeguarding minors. Officials maintain that the restrictions are proportionate and necessary. Reddit said its lawsuit is intended to clarify how the law is applied rather than to undermine child safety objectives. Broader Implications The case is being closely watched by technology firms and digital rights groups, as the court’s decision could influence how age-based online regulations are implemented in Australia and potentially other countries considering similar laws.
