Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is reportedly in discussions with Indian defence companies to establish a production line for Iron Dome interceptor missiles in India. The proposed facility could support Rafael’s global supply network amid rising international demand for air defence systems. Rafael Eyes Iron Dome Production in India The discussions are believed to focus on manufacturing Tamir interceptor missiles, which are used by the Iron Dome air defence system. No agreement, investment value, production location or prospective Indian partner has yet been officially announced. Rafael currently manufactures Iron Dome interceptors in Israel. A separate production facility has also been established in the United States through its partnership with Raytheon, an RTX company, to produce Tamir and SkyHunter missiles. An Indian production line could provide Rafael with additional manufacturing capacity, lower production costs and create an alternative supply base during periods of high operational demand. India-Israel Defence Manufacturing Partnership India and Israel already have extensive cooperation in missile and air defence technology. The jointly developed Barak-8 system has been inducted by the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Army in different configurations. Several Israeli defence companies have also established manufacturing partnerships in India under the government’s Make in India and defence indigenisation programmes. Local production of Iron Dome interceptors would further expand this industrial relationship. However, the reported discussions do not confirm that India plans to purchase or deploy the complete Iron Dome system. Global Demand for Air Defence Systems Demand for short- and medium-range air defence systems has increased sharply due to the growing battlefield use of rockets, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. Manufacturing interceptors in India could help Rafael fulfil export orders while meeting localisation requirements under India’s defence manufacturing policies. The facility could also strengthen India’s position as an international production and export hub for advanced defence equipment.
