A norovirus outbreak has affected more than 200 individuals aboard the luxury cruise ship Queen Mary 2 during a 29-day voyage through the Eastern Caribbean, raising renewed concerns about onboard health safety during long-haul cruises. The outbreak occurred as the vessel sailed from Southampton and was confirmed while docked in New York on March 18. Norovirus Cruise Outbreak A total of 224 passengers and 17 crew members suffered from symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. Norovirus, a highly contagious virus that causes acute gastroenteritis, is known for its rapid transmission in enclosed spaces such as cruise ships. The symptoms typically last between 24 and 72 hours, but the virus can continue to spread for up to two weeks after recovery. Samples were also collected for further testing to confirm the source of the infection. Officials from the cruise line reported that the number of new cases has since declined due to these swift containment measures. The Queen Mary 2 had departed Southampton on March 8 for a round-trip itinerary that included stops in New York, St. Lucia, Barbados, and Dominica. The voyage is expected to conclude back in Southampton on April 6.
