In a major step towards green urban transportation, the Indian government has announced plans to procure 14,028 electric buses across multiple phases. The initiative is part of the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, aiming to transform public transport systems across the country with clean energy alternatives. Electric Bus Procurement The Ministry of Heavy Industries has earmarked approximately ₹4,391 crore, about 40% of the ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE scheme, to subsidize the purchase of electric buses. The decision to execute the procurement in tranches reflects the need to accommodate varying readiness levels among different states, some of which are still finalizing their requirements. So far, the government has received proposals for around 15,400 electric buses from Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka, and Delhi, with Delhi alone requesting nearly 2,500 buses. The phased procurement strategy allows quicker rollout in states prepared for immediate implementation while giving others time to align with the program’s objectives. PM E-DRIVE Scheme The PM E-DRIVE scheme is a flagship policy designed to promote sustainable urban mobility by electrifying public transportation fleets. By providing subsidies, the government aims to make electric buses a financially viable alternative for state transport corporations, which often operate under tight budgetary constraints.
