Governments are expected to explain every administrative failure. Corporations are questioned over every financial irregularity. Public officials are scrutinised for every questionable decision. That relentless questioning performs an invaluable democratic service. The same principle, however, must also apply to journalism itself. When news organisations broadcast allegations that later prove to be unsupported or based on manipulated evidence, they too must explain how those editorial decisions were made. Viewers deserve to know what verification was undertaken, what evidence was relied upon and whether existing editorial procedures require reform. Equally important, corrections should never become afterthoughts. If a story receives hours of prime-time coverage, any subsequent correction deserves comparable visibility. Journalism cannot demand transparency from others while quietly moving past its own mistakes. Conclusion The NEET paper leak represented a genuine institutional failure that warranted intense public scrutiny and decisive government action. Students deserved justice. The integrity of India's most important medical entrance examination deserved to be restored. None of that is in dispute. Yet the fake OMR episode may ultimately be remembered for exposing a different institutional weakness altogether. Journalism occupies a privileged position in every democracy because society trusts it to separate fact from fiction before presenting information to the public. That trust is not sustained by speed, sensationalism or ratings. It is sustained by verification, editorial discipline and the humility to correct mistakes with the same prominence with which they were originally broadcast. If the NEET controversy prompts television newsrooms to rediscover those principles, then at least one positive lesson may emerge from an otherwise deeply troubling chapter in India's public life.
