Hundreds of young men and women are protesting in Ranchi over allegations that strike at the very foundation of government recruitment: paper leaks, examination irregularities, corruption and the fear that years of honest preparation can be rendered meaningless by a compromised system. These are not professional agitators searching for the next fashionable cause. They are government-job aspirants who have invested years of their lives, their families’ savings and their own emotional endurance in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. Their agitation concerns alleged irregularities in the 14th JPSC Combined Preliminary Examination, the JSSC-CGL examination and other recruitment processes. The students are demanding cancellation of the disputed JPSC examination, a CBI investigation, strict action against those responsible and structural reforms to restore credibility to Jharkhand’s recruitment machinery. The protest has continued through rain, hunger strikes and deteriorating health. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto agreed to consume water only after an appeal from Sonam Wangchuk, while continuing his hunger strike. This is not a symbolic campus demonstration over abstract ideological disagreements. It is a protest about employment, merit and the possibility that the future of thousands of aspirants may have been compromised. These students are not demanding preferential treatment. They are demanding that the rules promised to everyone be applied honestly to everyone. Yet the people who ordinarily claim permanent ownership over student anger are nowhere to be seen. Rahul Gandhi, who routinely presents himself as the national guardian of students whenever an agitation can be directed against the Union government, has not made the Ranchi protest a national political cause. The senior leadership of the Congress has not launched a campaign demanding accountability from the Jharkhand government. The national Left has not transformed the agitation into a nationwide struggle for youth justice. Bollywood’s celebrated conscience has failed to produce its customary placards, videos and solemn declarations. The influencer ecosystem, always ready to convert outrage into engagement, has discovered that Ranchi is apparently too far away for the algorithm. Their absence is not incidental. Each part of India’s outrage industry has its own reason for looking away. For Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, the political problem is obvious: the government facing the students’ anger is not controlled by the BJP. It is led by Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and sustained by a coalition in which Congress is a participant. For the national Left, the difficulty is equally clear. Aggressively attacking the Jharkhand government would mean attacking a government that belongs to the larger anti-BJP political formation. For Bollywood and much of the influencer class, Ranchi offers neither glamour nor an obvious reputational reward. There is no evidence establishing that individual celebrities or influencers were paid to ignore these students, just as the absence of publicly disclosed foreign funding cannot conclusively prove that none exists. But there is also no visible sign of the heavily resourced amplification network that so often materialises around politically fashionable protests. What Ranchi appears to have is something much less attractive to the outrage industry: ordinary students, a serious grievance and no glamorous production crew. The students are asking for justice, not ideological certification The central demand coming from Ranchi is not complicated. The students want a recruitment system they can trust. A government examination is more than an administrative exercise. For lakhs of aspirants, it represents years of preparation, missed social occasions, postponed family responsibilities and money that many households can scarcely afford to spend. Parents reduce expenses. Candidates move to coaching hubs. Young people repeatedly attempt examinations while watching the age limit approach. Entire families build their hopes around a system supposedly governed by merit. When allegations of paper leaks or organised malpractice emerge, the damage cannot be calculated merely by counting compromised question papers. The deeper damage is the destruction of faith. An honest candidate begins to wonder whether studying harder matters. A financially struggling family begins to ask whether sacrifice has any value. A generation already facing limited employment opportunities begins to suspect that even the narrow path available to it has been captured by money, influence and criminal networks. That is why the students’ demand for a CBI investigation cannot simply be dismissed as political theatre. The Jharkhand government has ordered a CID investigation and arrests have reportedly been made, but the protesters remain unconvinced. Their argument is straightforward: when the credibility of state institutions is itself under question, an investigation conducted entirely within the state system may not command sufficient public confidence. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has said that his government is treating the matter seriously and that justice will be delivered within the constitutional and legal framework. A student delegation is also expected to meet him. But assurances delivered after days of protest cannot substitute for clear decisions, transparent timelines and visible accountability. The students do not need another speech about sensitivity. They need to know whether the disputed examination remains credible, whether the investigation will reach beyond minor intermediaries and whether officials or beneficiaries will be prosecuted wherever evidence leads. Rahul Gandhi’s concern for students stops at the coalition border Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly positioned himself as the voice of India’s students and unemployed youth. When an examination controversy can be connected to the Modi government, he discovers urgency, moral clarity and a national platform. Student grievances become evidence of institutional collapse. Police action becomes an attack on democracy. Delayed recruitment becomes a betrayal of India’s youth. But Ranchi presents Rahul Gandhi with an inconvenient test. The government being questioned is run by a Congress ally. Congress is not an uninvolved spectator in Jharkhand. It is part of the ruling coalition. Its ministers participate in the administration. Its legislators help sustain the government. It cannot claim the privileges of power while disowning responsibility when that government faces uncomfortable questions. So where is Rahul Gandhi? Where is the visit to the protest site? Where is the meeting with the hunger-striking aspirants? Where is the demand that Hemant Soren accept an independent investigation? Where is the declaration that no coalition arrangement can be more important than the future of students? The BJP has already publicly challenged Rahul Gandhi over his silence, asking why he is not raising the voice of Jharkhand’s youth. That criticism carries political interest, of course, but the underlying question remains legitimate. If Rahul Gandhi believes examination integrity is a matter of principle, that principle must apply in Ranchi as firmly as it applies in Delhi or any BJP-governed state. If he refuses to confront an allied government, then his concern for students begins to resemble political targeting rather than moral conviction. His silence communicates an unmistakable hierarchy: student anger is useful when it can damage the BJP, but inconvenient when it threatens the stability of an opposition alliance. The students of Jharkhand deserve to know whether Rahul Gandhi stands with them or merely stands against Narendra Modi. Those are not the same thing. The Left’s revolution pauses for alliance arithmetic The national Left has spent decades claiming ownership over student politics. Its leaders speak endlessly about unemployment, public institutions, social justice and the rights of young people. Its student organisations present themselves as the natural guardians of campuses and aspirants. Its intellectual ecosystem can transform even a minor administrative dispute into a national ideological confrontation when the political conditions are favourable. Yet Ranchi has not inspired anything resembling that familiar mobilisation. This does not mean that every Left-affiliated individual or organisation has remained completely absent. Local participation or statements from individual activists may exist, and it would be inaccurate to erase them. But there has been no comparable national campaign involving prominent Left leaders, aligned academics, cultural personalities and activist organisations. The volume is missing. The coordination is missing. The urgency is missing. Why? Because the Jharkhand government belongs to the anti-BJP political camp. A sustained Left campaign against Hemant Soren would embarrass Congress, weaken an ally and disturb the carefully maintained fiction that opposition-ruled states must be handled differently from BJP-ruled states. The ideological vocabulary therefore changes. Under a BJP government, an alleged examination failure becomes proof of systemic oppression, cronyism and institutional capture. Under an allied government, the same kind of allegations are reduced to an administrative matter that should be resolved through dialogue. The victims have not changed. The political utility of their suffering has. That is the moral collapse Ranchi has exposed. The Left’s solidarity appears expansive only until it reaches the boundary of coalition convenience. Beyond that point, revolution must wait. Bollywood’s conscience cannot find Ranchi India’s film industry has produced an entire class of celebrity activists who appear whenever a cause offers the correct combination of media attention, social prestige and ideological approval. They post black squares. They hold placards. They record carefully lit video appeals. They sign open letters. They lecture ordinary citizens about silence and complicity. They speak about using privilege responsibly and insist that public figures have a duty to amplify the unheard. Where are they now? Government-job aspirants have spent days protesting in Ranchi. A student leader has undertaken a hunger strike. Young people are alleging that the recruitment system governing their future has been compromised. Yet Bollywood’s great defenders of democracy and student rights appear to have misplaced their passwords. There is no cinematic delegation arriving at the protest site. There is no coordinated social-media campaign. There are no viral messages demanding that the Jharkhand government answer the students. There is no parade of celebrities explaining that silence is violence. Perhaps Ranchi lacks the correct lighting. Perhaps examination aspirants sitting in the rain do not offer the same social currency as a fashionable protest in Delhi or Mumbai. Perhaps criticising a government backed by Congress would create awkward questions inside the political and cultural circles in which many celebrities operate. And perhaps the simplest explanation is that celebrity activism is frequently less courageous than its publicity suggests. It thrives when participation is safe, fashionable and applauded by the correct audience. It disappears when speaking requires consistency rather than performance. No evidence proves that Bollywood personalities have been offered money to remain silent. But their selective activism has created a reasonable public suspicion that many causes become visible only when supported by publicity machinery, professional networks or reputational incentives. Ranchi has suffering, but apparently not sponsorship. The influencer gang cannot monetise an unscripted struggle The modern influencer does not merely comment on events. The influencer converts events into content. Every controversy is evaluated for reach, engagement, audience alignment, brand safety and monetisation. A protest becomes attractive when it generates clips, collaborations, speaking invitations and increased visibility. Outrage is packaged into reels. Solidarity becomes personal branding. Political morality is compressed into hashtags, thumbnails and sponsored-looking authenticity. But Ranchi is an awkward product. The students are not offering a fashionable ideological script. Their demands concern recruitment examinations, administrative accountability and an independent investigation. Their grievance is directed against a government belonging to the opposition alliance. Supporting them would require many political influencers to criticise the same ecosystem they routinely defend. There is also no visible celebrity-led campaign creating algorithmic permission to participate. No major entertainment figure has made support fashionable. No international personality has triggered a social-media stampede. No professional amplification network appears to be manufacturing ready-made graphics and talking points for thousands of accounts. So the influencer gang waits. The absence of evidence prevents any responsible writer from declaring that specific influencers were previously paid to support particular protests or are currently being paid to ignore Ranchi. But one does not require access to private bank accounts to observe a pattern of selective enthusiasm. When a cause offers ideological approval, networking opportunities and viral potential, influencers speak with extraordinary confidence. When ordinary students confront an allied government without a fashionable campaign behind them, those same influencers suddenly rediscover nuance, silence and the importance of waiting for investigations. Their compassion follows the algorithm. Their courage follows the crowd. Their conscience appears only after somebody else has made the cause profitable. Ranchi does not fit the approved protest template The agitation in Jharkhand fails almost every test imposed by India’s outrage establishment. The government under scrutiny is not led by the BJP. The protest cannot easily be converted into an attack on Narendra Modi. The demands are practical rather than revolutionary. The participants are ordinary aspirants, not celebrity activists. The movement does not appear to have the visible backing of wealthy advocacy institutions or an international publicity network. Criticising the state government could damage Congress and the broader opposition alliance. In other words, Ranchi lacks political usefulness. That is why a protest involving examination integrity, unemployment and the future of young Indians has struggled to command the national attention normally generated by far smaller but more politically convenient agitations. If these same students were protesting identical allegations under a BJP chief minister, would Rahul Gandhi remain silent? Would Left leaders call it merely a recruitment dispute? Would Bollywood ignore the hunger strike? Would influencers wait quietly for the state investigation to conclude? Everyone knows the answer. The protest would be described as a youth uprising. Television debates would ask whether democracy itself was in danger. Celebrity accounts would circulate identical slogans. International commentators would be informed that India’s students had lost faith in the system. But because the political address is Ranchi and the government is led by Hemant Soren with Congress support, the outrage industry has placed the story in its lowest priority category. A genuine movement does not need celebrity permission The students should not interpret this silence as proof that their movement lacks legitimacy. It may prove the exact opposite. They have continued without waiting for Rahul Gandhi to arrive. They have raised their voices without Bollywood lending them a microphone. They have sustained the agitation without the influencer class converting it into a trend. They have endured rain and hunger without professional activists turning their pain into branding material. Their protest exists because the grievance exists. That distinction matters. India has witnessed causes whose online visibility exceeded their support on the ground. Ranchi presents the reverse: a substantial grievance with limited elite amplification. The protesters do not need ideological certification from Delhi. They do not need celebrity selfies or international validation. They need the Jharkhand government to answer specific questions and take specific action. Was the disputed examination compromised? Who benefited? Who facilitated the alleged malpractice? Will the investigation reach officials and organisers rather than stopping with expendable middlemen? Will the government publish findings transparently? Will the examination be cancelled if its integrity cannot be defended? Those questions will remain even after the cameras leave, the hashtags fade and political parties move to the next controversy. The media must examine its own selective vision The protest has received reporting from several national and regional organisations, but coverage alone does not settle the question of proportionality. Why has an agitation involving recruitment irregularities, hunger strikes and demands for a central investigation not dominated national discussion? Why did students need to protest for days before the chief minister delivered a substantial public response? Why must aspirants repeatedly escalate their agitation merely to be acknowledged? Hemant Soren first publicly addressed the agitation after it had already gathered momentum, saying his government was taking the allegations with seriousness and sensitivity. The delay itself helped deepen the perception that the administration expected the students to tire and disperse. National media organisations must ask whether their editorial attention is also influenced by political fashion. A student protest should not require a Delhi location, a celebrity endorsement or an anti-BJP narrative to become nationally relevant. Young Indians losing faith in public recruitment is a national story regardless of which party governs the state. Hemant Soren must offer more than assurances The chief minister now faces a choice. He can continue offering broad promises that justice will be done after the investigation, or he can recognise that the crisis is no longer limited to one examination. It is a crisis of confidence in the institutions responsible for recruitment. A credible response requires more than arrests and statements. The government must publish a clear timeline for the investigation, disclose the nature of the alleged irregularities to the extent legally possible and explain why students should trust the process. It must establish whether the examination can still be defended. It must guarantee protection for witnesses and whistle-blowers. It must ensure that the inquiry follows evidence upward rather than merely producing a few convenient arrests at the bottom of the chain. Most importantly, the government must stop treating the demand for transparency as hostility. These students are not enemies of Jharkhand. They are citizens asking the state to honour its own recruitment rules. If the government believes the examinations were fair, it must demonstrate that fairness with evidence. If the process was compromised, it must cancel the affected examination and punish everyone responsible. There is no respectable middle path in which students are praised for their patience while the system protects itself. Their silence is now part of the scandal The Jharkhand agitation has exposed more than alleged failures inside Rahul Gandhi is quiet because speaking honestly would require him to confront a government sustained by his own party. The national Left is subdued because alliance discipline has taken precedence over ideological consistency. Bollywood is absent because protesting students in Ranchi offer little glamour, social prestige or reputational profit. The influencer gang is uninterested because an organic struggle by ordinary aspirants cannot easily be converted into fashionable, monetisable content. Each section of the outrage industry has its own excuse. Together, their silence forms a pattern too obvious to ignore. Ranchi’s students are protesting without the usual entourage. There are no celebrity caravans, no choreographed solidarity campaigns and no endless lectures from professional defenders of democracy. There is no visible international amplification apparatus transforming their grievances into a global spectacle. There are simply young Indians asking whether merit still matters. That should have been enough. Instead, Ranchi has demonstrated that much of India’s public conscience is activated not by the seriousness of an injustice but by the political identity of the accused, the ideological usefulness of the victim and the promotional value of the cause. The students of Jharkhand may be standing alone, but their protest has already accomplished something important. It has forced the country to see that India does not merely possess an outrage ecosystem. It possesses an outrage industry—politically selective, commercially calculating and mysteriously unavailable whenever the wrong government must be questioned.
