The government has directed Telegram to act against the spread of pirated films, OTT shows and other audio-visual content on its platform, seeking a detailed action taken report within 15 days. Government Notice To Telegram On Piracy The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a notice to Telegram over the widespread circulation of pirated movies and OTT content through channels, groups and bots on the messaging platform. Telegram has been asked to take immediate steps to curb copyright violations and submit an Action Taken Report within 15 days. The notice marks a stronger regulatory push against digital piracy affecting India’s film, broadcasting and streaming sectors. Telegram Asked For Platform-Level Action Officials have asked Telegram to move beyond case-by-case takedowns and adopt a broader platform-level approach. The company has been directed to act against repeat infringers, including channels, groups, bots, accounts, administrators and linked entities. The government has also sought details of Telegram’s grievance redressal system for film producers, OTT platforms and law enforcement agencies. Authorities have said a purely reactive approach may not be enough to meet due diligence obligations under Indian IT rules. Pirated Films And OTT Content Under Scrutiny The notice follows earlier action against thousands of Telegram channels carrying pirated content. Authorities have warned that continued availability of infringing material or an incomplete response could invite further examination under the applicable legal framework. The government has also reminded the platform that copyright infringement can attract criminal liability under the Copyright Act, 1957 and the Cinematograph Act, 1952. The move signals growing pressure on digital platforms to prevent large-scale piracy and protect India’s creator economy.
