US President Donald Trump has announced a phased tariff plan for imported generic medicines, offering two years of duty-free access before imposing rates of 100% and eventually 200%. The proposal could significantly affect India, a major supplier of affordable generic drugs to the American market. Trump Announces Generic Drug Tariffs Trump said imported generic medicines would face a zero tariff for two years beginning August 1, 2026. A 100% duty would then apply for one year from August 2028, followed by a 200% tariff thereafter. The administration says the transition period will give pharmaceutical companies time to establish manufacturing operations in the United States. However, detailed implementation rules, exemptions and eligibility conditions have not yet been fully disclosed. The plan expands Washington’s pharmaceutical trade measures beyond patented medicines, which are already subject to separate tariffs. Indian Pharma Exports Face Risk India could be among the countries most exposed because generic medicines account for most of its pharmaceutical exports to the United States. Indian companies supply a substantial share of medicines dispensed through the American healthcare system. India exported approximately $9.7 billion worth of pharmaceutical products to the US in 2025, representing about 38% of its global pharmaceutical exports. Earlier protections for generic medicines had limited the impact of American pharmaceutical tariffs on Indian manufacturers. A 100% or 200% tariff could make imported medicines substantially more expensive unless producers absorb the cost, negotiate exemptions or move manufacturing to the US. US Drug Prices May Increase Generic medicines represent about 90% of prescriptions filled in the United States but account for a much smaller share of overall drug spending. Industry representatives have previously warned that steep duties could increase costs, reduce competition and worsen shortages of low-margin medicines. Indian pharmaceutical companies may respond by expanding American manufacturing, forming local partnerships or seeking tariff relief through trade negotiations. The final impact will depend on formal regulations and whether the India-US trade framework provides preferential treatment for generic drugs.
