Iran has said it sees no reason to fear the new defence pact between Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, describing the agreement as part of a broader regional shift towards countries taking greater responsibility for their own security. Iran Responds to Mecca Defence Pact Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran does not view the trilateral agreement as being directed against Iran. He argued that greater reliance by regional countries on their own security capabilities could reduce dependence on outside powers. Baghaei indicated that Iran could view such arrangements positively when they reflect regional realities, remain inclusive and contribute towards preventing instability. Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia Join Forces Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, establishing a mutual defence framework between the three countries. The pact states that an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three, drawing comparisons with NATO’s collective defence principle. Officials from the participating countries have maintained that the agreement is defensive and is not targeted at any particular country. Iran Sees Shift in Regional Security Tehran’s response suggests it is seeking to avoid confrontation with the emerging security grouping despite changing strategic alignments across West Asia. Iran has instead presented the agreement as evidence that regional governments are increasingly looking beyond traditional external security guarantees. The formation of the pact could significantly reshape regional defence cooperation, bringing together Pakistan’s military capabilities, Türkiye’s NATO experience and Saudi Arabia’s growing strategic influence.
