Pakistan has proposed an 18% increase in its defence budget for fiscal year 2026-27, taking the allocation to PKR 3 trillion for the first time. Pakistan Defence Budget Reaches PKR 3 Trillion Pakistan Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the federal budget with a proposed defence allocation of PKR 3 trillion for the financial year beginning July 2026. The allocation marks a sharp rise from the previous year and represents one of the most significant increases in Pakistan’s military spending in recent years. The government has linked the higher allocation to regional security uncertainty. Pakistan Budget 2026 Defence Hike The defence spending increase comes within a total federal budget of PKR 18.77 trillion. While military spending has risen, development expenditure has been limited as Pakistan works to meet fiscal targets under its IMF programme. The budget also sets a tax revenue target of PKR 15.26 trillion and aims to support economic recovery while managing debt obligations, inflation and external financing pressure. Regional Security And Op Sindoor Context The defence hike comes a year after Operation Sindoor, which increased military tensions between India and Pakistan. While the budget does not officially link the increase only to that episode, the timing has drawn attention because of the wider regional security environment. Pakistan has also cited uncertainty in the region as a reason for strengthening defence preparedness. The proposed budget will require parliamentary approval before it is finalised.
