Pakistan’s push to join BRICS remains stalled despite diplomatic efforts to secure support from existing members, with India’s objections posing a major obstacle because expansion of the grouping requires consensus among all member states. Pakistan Has Sought BRICS Membership Since 2023 Islamabad formally applied for BRICS membership in 2023 and has since repeatedly expressed its desire to join the grouping, arguing that Pakistan could contribute to cooperation among emerging economies and the wider Global South. Pakistan has intensified diplomatic outreach to BRICS members, particularly China and Russia, as it seeks support for its application. However, it remains outside the expanded grouping as leaders gather in New Delhi for the 2026 BRICS Summit. India’s Objections Can Block Pakistan’s Entry BRICS does not operate through a conventional veto mechanism. Instead, major decisions, including membership expansion, are taken by consensus. That means Pakistan cannot be admitted unless India and every other member agree to its inclusion. India has reservations about Pakistan’s admission amid longstanding bilateral tensions, particularly concerns surrounding cross-border terrorism and Islamabad’s broader regional policies. Support from individual BRICS members therefore cannot by itself secure Pakistan’s entry. Pakistan Sees BRICS as Economic Opportunity For Islamabad, BRICS membership could provide greater access to an influential network of emerging economies while strengthening trade, investment and diplomatic relationships beyond traditional Western-led institutions. BRICS has expanded significantly in recent years, increasing its global economic and political weight. However, the enlargement process has also made internal consensus increasingly complicated. Pakistan’s application demonstrates how bilateral disputes between members and prospective entrants can directly affect the grouping’s ability to expand further.c
