Pahalgam cancellations – Bharat Pulse News

The deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 28 lives has dealt a serious blow to the region's tourism industry. In the days following the incident, travel agencies have reported a 25% surge in tour cancellations, as travelers across India and abroad pull back from planned visits citing safety concerns. Immediate Impact on Tourism The attack has shaken the confidence of tourists, especially those who had planned summer vacations or honeymoons in Kashmir. Tour operators are witnessing mass withdrawals, and bookings for May and June—considered peak tourist months—have dropped significantly. Hotels in Pahalgam, Srinagar, and Gulmarg are experiencing a spike in last-minute cancellations. Some operators say that group tours are being completely scrapped, with travelers shifting to alternate destinations like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Measures Taken by Authorities In response to the panic, security forces have ramped up patrols in all major tourist areas. Checkpoints have been increased, and additional personnel have been deployed in and around Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Srinagar Airport. The Jammu and Kashmir administration is also working with airlines and travel boards to ensure safe passage for tourists currently in the Valley. However, despite these efforts, fear continues to dictate travel sentiment. Several states have issued advisories, while some travel portals have paused promotions for Kashmir packages. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has requested airlines to accommodate changes for travelers cancelling or modifying Kashmir-bound tickets, in light of the ongoing situation. Economic Ramifications Tourism, a vital pillar of Kashmir’s economy, is facing another setback just as the region was showing signs of recovery post-COVID. Small business owners, guides, hoteliers, and shikara operators are now bracing for financial stress. Travel associations have appealed to the government for a revival package to support local tourism-dependent livelihoods and restore confidence in Kashmir as a safe travel destination.
