Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said the political and emotional impact of the Article 370 abrogation remains unresolved. Marking seven years since the constitutional change, he pledged to continue seeking redress for what he described as injustices against the region. Omar Abdullah on Article 370 Abdullah invoked Robert Frost’s line, “Miles to go before I sleep,” while signalling that his campaign against the consequences of the August 5, 2019 decisions would continue. He said the wounds created by the removal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status had not yet healed. The National Conference leader maintained that wrongs committed against the people would eventually be corrected. His remarks reflected the party’s continuing opposition to the Centre’s decision, although he did not announce any new political or legal initiative. Jammu Kashmir Abrogation Anniversary On August 5, 2019, the Union government effectively revoked Article 370 and removed the constitutional provisions that had granted Jammu and Kashmir special status. Parliament also approved the reorganisation of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional change in December 2023. Political parties including the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and Congress have continued to criticise the decision and observed its seventh anniversary with protests and public statements. Statehood Restoration Demand Continues The restoration of full statehood remains a central demand of Abdullah’s government. Jammu and Kashmir currently has an elected legislative assembly but continues to function as a Union Territory, with significant powers retained by the lieutenant governor and the Centre. PM Modi, meanwhile, said Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh had entered a decisive new chapter since 2019. The Centre maintains that the changes strengthened national integration, governance and development across the region.
