India has notified updated immigration rules requiring certain foreign nationals to complete registration if their stay crosses prescribed limits. The changes are part of the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. India Foreigner Registration Rules Updated Foreign nationals entering India on visas valid for 180 days or less will not need registration if they leave within the permitted period. However, those who wish to stay beyond 180 days must register within 14 days after completing 180 days of arrival in India. Foreigners entering India on visas valid for more than 180 days, but with a condition that each stay should not exceed 180 days, must register before crossing that 180-day limit if they plan to remain longer during a single visit or in aggregate during a calendar year. Visa Stay Extension Rules For Foreigners The new rules also require foreigners who enter India without a visa but are permitted to stay on arrival to complete registration before their allowed stay expires, if they intend to remain in India. Children born in India to foreign parents must be electronically reported to the Registration Officer within 30 days of birth for visa-related services, including new visa issuance and exit permission. Immigration And Foreigners Act 2025 The Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 consolidates India’s immigration framework and replaces older laws governing entry, stay, registration and foreigner management. The law gives authorities powers to regulate immigration, check documents and enforce penalties for violations. No registration is required for foreigners with visas valid up to 180 days who do not overstay, children below 12 years of age, and Overseas Citizen of India cardholders. The changes are aimed at improving immigration monitoring while keeping formal procedures limited to longer stays and specific categories.
