One month after devastating flash floods tore through Nepal’s Himalayan districts, recovery operations remain focused on identifying victims, tracing thousands still missing and restoring roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure damaged by the disaster. Nepal Flood Death Toll Crosses 1,450 The August 26 floods along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems killed more than 1,450 people, while over 5,000 remain missing. The disaster affected Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and several downstream districts, cutting off communities and destroying homes, roads and livelihoods. More than 13,000 people were rescued in the immediate aftermath, but recovery teams continue searching through debris, landslide zones and damaged infrastructure. DNA Identification Continues for Flood Victims Identification of recovered bodies remains a major challenge. Authorities have relied increasingly on DNA profiling because many victims could not be identified through conventional methods. Families of missing Indian nationals have also been asked to provide biological samples to assist forensic matching. Hundreds of foreign nationals were reported missing after the floods, including visitors, workers and pilgrims. Search teams have also faced difficult conditions around damaged hydropower projects, where tunnels and underground structures were inundated or buried by debris. Nepal Rebuilds Roads and Hydropower Projects Restoring transport links remains another priority as damaged roads and bridges continue to disrupt movement and relief supplies. Temporary bridges and road-clearance operations have reopened some routes, but reconstruction is expected to take considerably longer in heavily affected areas. At least 13 hydropower projects were damaged, creating a major energy and economic impact. Initial estimates suggest overall losses from the disaster could amount to around 4% to 5% of Nepal’s GDP.
