Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah has appealed for calm after communal violence between Hindu and Muslim groups left at least three people dead and 25 injured across southeastern Nepal. Nepal Communal Violence Leaves Three Dead The unrest began in Dewanganj in Sunsari district on Sunday night after a dispute over loud music and religious flags during preparations for a Hindu Bol Bam pilgrimage. The disagreement escalated into stone-pelting, vandalism and clashes between members of the two communities. Security personnel used batons, tear gas and warning shots before the Armed Police Force opened fire. One person died at the scene, while another injured person later succumbed. A third person, reportedly a teenager, was killed during subsequent violence in Siraha district on Thursday. Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the conduct of those involved remain under investigation. Curfew Imposed Across Southeastern Nepal Authorities imposed curfews and prohibitory orders in several towns across Sunsari, Siraha and other affected districts to prevent further violence. Public gatherings, demonstrations and processions have been restricted in sensitive areas. Police reported no fresh violence on Friday, but security measures remained in place because of continuing communal tension. Nepalese authorities also increased coordination with local representatives, political parties, civil society groups and religious leaders. The disturbances occurred in Nepal’s southern plains near the Indian border, where authorities have tightened security and increased monitoring. Balendra Shah Promises Impartial Investigation Shah said the government would conduct a fair and impartial investigation and transparently punish those responsible for the violence. The Home Ministry has formed an investigation committee, while the National Security Council has reviewed the wider law-and-order situation. Home Minister Sudan Gurung met the families of the two people killed in Sunsari. The government announced financial assistance of approximately $6,660 for each family and said similar support would be extended to the third victim’s relatives.
