Saudi Arabia Executes Two Bangladeshi Nationals The executed individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir, 22, and Siti Akhtar, also known as Sweety Akhtar. Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry said the two were convicted of violating the sanctity of a mosque. Their death sentences were imposed under ta'zir, a provision of Islamic law allowing judicial discretion in determining punishment. However, Saudi authorities have not publicly disclosed the precise nature of the alleged offence or detailed the circumstances surrounding their prosecution. Bangladesh Seeks Answers Over Saudi Executions Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry said it had not been informed before the executions and requested copies of the court verdicts, details of the charges and clarification regarding consular notification. The two were reportedly detained in August 2023, although accounts of their original charges differ from the offence subsequently announced by Saudi authorities. Their families said they learned about the executions through news reports rather than official communication. Human Rights Groups Question Saudi Legal Proceedings Human rights organisations have raised concerns about whether the defendants received adequate legal assistance and opportunities to defend themselves. Nazrul Islam's father, Abdul Basir, demanded justice and questioned whether his son had received a fair trial. Siti Akhtar's father, Fazal Mia, also expressed uncertainty about the circumstances of his daughter's death. Bangladesh has sought a diplomatic explanation while maintaining its relationship with Saudi Arabia, where approximately 3.5 million Bangladeshi migrant workers reside. As of October 21, Saudi authorities had not provided the requested clarification.
