National Testing Agency overhaul

The National Testing Agency has terminated 47 officials as part of a major institutional overhaul following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. Legal and criminal proceedings are expected against some of those removed, based on internal findings and inputs from investigating agencies. NTA Terminates 47 Officials The dismissals represent one of the most significant personnel actions taken by the testing agency following scrutiny of its examination procedures. Officials said further disciplinary and administrative measures could follow as responsibility is established for failures surrounding national entrance examinations. Details about the identities, positions and alleged roles of the terminated officials have not been publicly disclosed. Authorities have also not confirmed how many will face criminal prosecution. The action came shortly after Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi was transferred to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj amid wider changes within the education administration. NEET Paper Leak Triggers Overhaul The NEET-UG paper leak forced authorities to cancel the original medical entrance examination and conduct a fresh test for affected candidates. The controversy led to widespread student protests demanding accountability, stronger examination safeguards and action against those responsible. The NTA is now expected to review its outsourcing arrangements and strengthen controls governing question-paper preparation, examination centres, cybersecurity and confidential data handling. Specialists in forensic investigation, assessment research and examination operations are also expected to be recruited as part of the restructuring. Criminal Action Against Officials Internal inquiries and evidence collected by investigative agencies will determine the legal action pursued against individual officials. Termination from service does not itself establish criminal guilt, which must be determined through investigation and judicial proceedings. The government is also moving to strengthen penalties for organised paper leaks and improve the prosecution of examination-related offences. Further reforms are expected as authorities seek to restore confidence in centrally administered entrance and recruitment examinations.
