Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has described a legal notice issued by the BJP as a “love letter”, saying he considered it recognition that the party could not ignore him politically. The notice relates to his allegation that a BJP representative attempted to induce National Conference legislators to defect. Omar Abdullah Responds to BJP Legal Notice Abdullah said he had received an electronic copy of the notice and regarded it as a “mark of respect”. He accused the BJP of taking political disputes to court instead of responding through political debate. The Chief Minister said he could have made the allegations inside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where statements would have received legislative privilege. However, he chose to raise the matter at a political gathering and expected a political response. BJP Seeks Apology Over Bribery Allegation The BJP issued the notice after Abdullah alleged that a party functionary had approached a National Conference legislator from Jammu with an offer of ₹20 crore to ₹30 crore, a ministerial position and the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in exchange for changing parties. The BJP rejected the allegation as false, baseless and defamatory. It demanded an unconditional public apology within seven days and warned that it could pursue civil and criminal proceedings, including a ₹100 crore defamation claim. National Conference Plans Legal Response Abdullah said the National Conference would begin sending legal notices to BJP leaders over allegations made against the party and its leadership in recent months. He maintained that the NC had previously answered such claims politically but would now consider legal action. The dispute has further intensified tensions between the two parties amid renewed demands for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
