Tata Trusts has formally begun the process of identifying a successor to N Chandrasekaran as chairman of Tata Sons after he announced that he would not seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027. The move sets in motion a major leadership transition at the holding company of the Tata Group. Tata Trusts Begins Chairman Selection Process The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has passed a resolution to initiate the formation of a selection committee as soon as possible. Under Tata Sons’ governance framework, a five-member selection committee is responsible for recommending a candidate for the chairman’s position. The principal Tata Trusts nominate three members, while two representatives come from the Tata Sons board. Tata Trusts has said it will support a smooth, timely and orderly transition consistent with the long-term interests of Tata Sons and the wider group. Chandrasekaran to Leave Tata Sons in 2027 Chandrasekaran has led Tata Sons since 2017 and will complete his current term in February 2027. His decision followed uncertainty over his proposed reappointment. Chandrasekaran said he would not seek another term after the proposal failed to receive unanimous support from the Tata Sons board. He will continue leading the group during the transition period. Noel Tata Takes Key Role in Succession Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata is expected to have significant influence over the succession process because philanthropic Tata trusts collectively hold 66% of Tata Sons. The search comes at an important stage for the group, with major investments underway across aviation, semiconductors, electronics, automobiles and digital businesses. No successor has been formally announced, and the selection committee will assess potential candidates before making its recommendation to the Tata Sons board.
