Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid out a bold new vision for India's space program, outlining an ambitious roadmap that includes an Indian space station, a crewed lunar landing, and future interplanetary missions to Mars and Venus. Speaking at an event that celebrated the growing capabilities of India's space sector, Modi emphasized that Indian astronauts would soon leave their footprints not only on the Moon, but also aspire to reach Mars and Venus in the years to come. India’s Space Roadmap: What Lies Ahead As per the timeline laid out by the Prime Minister, India aims to establish its own space station, named the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, by 2035. This would mark a giant leap in capability, enabling long-duration missions and experiments in microgravity. The next major target is a crewed lunar mission by 2040. This mission is expected to be the culmination of ISRO’s growing mastery in human spaceflight, navigation, and deep-space communication. It would also place India in the elite league of countries capable of sending humans to the Moon. Modi also mentioned future plans to explore Mars and Venus, with ISRO gearing up for its next interplanetary objectives. While a second Mars mission is under planning, the Venus mission — aimed at studying the planet’s surface and atmosphere — is expected to take off later this decade. Supporting Missions in the Pipeline The Chandrayaan-4 mission, which is planned as India’s first lunar sample return initiative, is being developed to further scientific understanding of the Moon. Meanwhile, the Gaganyaan program, India’s first human spaceflight mission, is progressing with astronaut training and final hardware checks. It will serve as a critical stepping stone toward crewed missions to the Moon and beyond. This vision not only reaffirms India’s aspirations in the domain of space science but also strengthens the country’s position in the global space economy.
