Modi Yunus meet – Bharat Pulse News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. This was their first official interaction since Sheikh Hasina’s government was ousted in August 2024. At the center of the talks was India’s concern over attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh and the future of bilateral cooperation. PM Modi’s Appeal on Minority Safety During the meeting, Modi raised serious concerns over the reported violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. He urged Yunus to take concrete action to investigate the incidents and ensure the safety and dignity of affected communities. Modi emphasized that protecting minorities is crucial not only for Bangladesh’s internal harmony but also for maintaining regional stability and goodwill. Yunus Cautions Against External Interference In response, Chief Adviser Yunus acknowledged India’s concerns but pushed back on the growing narrative of widespread violence, cautioning against overreliance on social media sources. He reiterated the importance of territorial sovereignty and non-interference, while affirming Bangladesh’s commitment to maintaining law and order through its own mechanisms. Extradition Request for Sheikh Hasina Another key topic was the request by Bangladesh’s interim administration for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is believed to be residing in India. While details of India’s response remain confidential, the matter introduces a sensitive dimension to diplomatic relations, particularly as legal proceedings against Hasina move forward in Dhaka. Border Management and Trade Opportunities The leaders also discussed the need for stricter border controls to prevent illegal crossings and smuggling. Both sides agreed on the importance of coordinated law enforcement and intelligence-sharing. On a more positive note, they explored the possibility of a free trade agreement, highlighting the potential for boosting regional commerce and investment. Strengthening Strategic Dialogue This meeting marked an attempt by both nations to recalibrate their relationship in the wake of political shifts in Dhaka. By addressing contentious issues head-on—minority protection, political asylum, and trade—India and Bangladesh are signaling a willingness to engage constructively while safeguarding their respective national interests. The outcomes of this dialogue may shape the trajectory of India-Bangladesh relations in the near future, especially as both countries navigate evolving regional dynamics and domestic political transitions.
