India’s Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has strongly refuted claims that E20 petrol—fuel containing 20% ethanol—reduces vehicle mileage. He called such reports baseless and suggested they might be promoted by industry groups seeking to protect their interests. Minister Issues Open Challenge Addressing the issue at a business summit, Gadkari offered, “You show me one vehicle anywhere in the world that had problems because of E20 petrol!” He maintained that the fuel blend poses no performance risk and is safe for vehicles. Government Finds Only Minor Effects The Petroleum Ministry has also weighed in, stating there is no major engine damage from using E20 fuel. They acknowledged, however, that newer cars might experience up to a 2% drop in mileage, while older ones might see up to a 6% dip. These changes are typically manageable with regular servicing and inexpensive part replacements, such as rubber gaskets. Benefits Beyond Fuel Costs Gadkari emphasized that E20 fuel helps reduce India’s oil import bill and supports agriculture. He highlighted that the rising demand for ethanol—derived from crops like maize—has doubled farming income in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. He believes this shift could boost agriculture's GDP share from 12% to 22%. Eyes on the Future Looking ahead, Gadkari expressed confidence in even greater use of ethanol, calling for "100% ethanol" as India’s fuel of the future. His remarks underline the government’s push toward cleaner fuel options and economic benefits for farmers.
