A planned meeting between Iran and Gulf countries in Oman to discuss security and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed, dealing a setback to regional efforts aimed at easing tensions around one of the world’s most important energy routes. Oman Postpones Iran-Gulf Talks Over Consensus The meeting had been scheduled for September 14 in Salalah and was expected to bring together Iran, Gulf Arab states and Iraq. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said the gathering had been postponed “in the interests of consensus”, adding that Oman remained committed to dialogue aimed at promoting regional stability and lasting cooperation. Iranian officials said the postponement followed requests from some regional countries. No new date has been announced. Strait of Hormuz Shipping Plan Faces Delay The talks were expected to focus on proposed arrangements for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and Oman have been working on new maritime routes intended to facilitate vessel movements through the strategic waterway, which has suffered severe disruption during the continuing regional conflict. Before the current crisis, roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed through Hormuz. Regional Tensions Complicate Diplomatic Efforts The postponement comes amid renewed instability across the Gulf and Red Sea region. Recent attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz, strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure and advances by Yemen’s Houthis have heightened concerns over the security of alternative maritime and oil export routes. Oil prices have climbed above $100 a barrel as markets assess the risk of prolonged supply disruption. Oman has played a central mediation role throughout the crisis, but the latest postponement highlights the difficulty of securing agreement among regional governments while military tensions remain high.
