Indian conglomerate Essar Group is set to invest $18 billion in a major integrated steel project in the United States, combining a new steel complex in Iowa with iron ore operations in Minnesota, US President Donald Trump has announced. Essar Plans $15 Billion Iowa Steel Plant The centrepiece of the investment is a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa being developed through Essar-backed Mesabi Metallics. The facility is expected to initially produce around 7.5 million tonnes of steel annually before expanding to approximately 10 million tonnes. Trump described it as one of the largest steel plants in American history. Production is expected to begin around 2030. The project is projected to create about 1,750 permanent jobs while supporting up to 6,000 construction jobs during development. $18 Billion Investment Creates Integrated Supply Chain The wider $18 billion investment includes approximately $3 billion connected to Mesabi Metallics’ mining operations in Minnesota. Iron ore extracted in Minnesota will be transported to the Iowa steel facility, creating a vertically integrated US supply chain spanning mining, transportation and steelmaking. Essar said the project would use American ore, rail networks, energy and workers, strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity while reducing dependence on imported steel. Trump Links Essar Project to US Manufacturing Push Trump presented the investment as evidence that his administration’s industrial and tariff policies were encouraging companies to expand manufacturing inside the United States. The administration has maintained a 50% tariff on many imported steel products as part of its strategy to protect domestic producers. The Iowa facility is projected to contribute around $95 billion to the US economy during its first decade of operations, according to estimates released alongside the announcement.
